Bicol University: Truly a Source of Pride

I am always grateful to this University for nurturing me both as a former student and now an alumnus.  This university has also been a source of bread and butter form me.  It has given me opportunities to use my talents freely.  I value most the intellectual and academic freedom it gave me.  I will always be grateful to this university.  Bicol University is one interesting place to visit in Legazpi City.  It is a state university.

The Facade of the Old Gabaldon Building, Built during the American Occupation Period.  Now houses the Laboratory High School.  The facade has been iconic, it represented Bicol University and its Ideals.

The Newly Inaugurated Monument in front of the commencement grounds.  The four pillars symbolizes the values of the University - Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service.

THE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE

Even as my occupation is a professor and every year like the rest I am compelled to attend recognition rites, There is always the feeling of uneasiness.  This uneasiness arise from my own personal view that it is entirely unnecessary to have recognition rites of sorts where the achievers are given medals and accolades.  This entire system of recognition runs counter to my cherished Christian values.  Christ said that when we do good we should not allow the right hand know what the left is doing.  When we lend we should not expect any payment in return.  And he who greatest among you must serve.  For the first shall be the last and the last shall be the first.  The gospel interpretation of greatness is so different from this world.  Thus my uneasiness.  For in the end we must the recognition of God and not of men.  The disaster in Japan is a classic example of even if how much we strive and achieve, a tsunami can carry them all away in oblivion.  So let us set our hearts to where it really belong-to love God and to love one's neighbor as we love ourselves.

SOMETHINGS ARE WORTH KEEPING.....

Sometimes our closets get filled up with stuffs we no longer need or things that we need still. But when there is enough surplus we tend to give them away. However, as I've learned from my grandparents ( I dunno if these are plain superstition, but I complied anyway)there are things or belongings we should not give away for free as it will have a negative repercussion for the future. These items are:

SHOES:

They said that shoes are the possessions we use to step down.  So if we give them away the person who receives it will in the future trample on us.  So instead of giving it away sell it for whatever price.  You could even set the price at 1 peso only as long is it something that is bought.  (This superstition defies rational explanation hehehehe)

PENS:

Pens are object we use for writing.  We sign our names with them and we express our thoughts through the pen.  Hence giving away your pens for free will mean that you are going to be doing bad decisions in the future.  If you give away your pen, somebody is going to write off your name.  (hehehe do you how blatant is the superstition?)

But for the sake of peace I simply givein to the superstition of my folks.  There is no point to argue because they have lived longer and possess more knowledge than I do.
